Project Journey
When close friends introduced Mollie to a modest cottage on three-quarter-acre waterfront lot, she immediately recognised its potential as a standout Bermuda residential property. With access to Rocky Bay and Devonshire Bay Park, what began as a home refurbishment of the original 2,400-square-foot cottage evolved into a full residential build and custom home design project.
To maximize outdoor space, the street-side portion of the existing home, which fell within the setback, was retained, while the remainder of the property was completely reimagined. The result is a 4,200-square-foot main residence with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, along with a pool and a one-bedroom, one-bath pool house.
As an experienced architect specialising in Bermuda design and architecture, Mollie used the project as an opportunity to explore both new and new-to-Bermuda systems, products, and home design approaches. These included innovative HVAC solutions, advanced window systems, and the integration of reclaimed architectural elements aligned with modern house design and evolving standards seen in new construction homes.
While some subcontractors were initially sceptical of the project’s unconventional aspects, the design ultimately won them over. The completed home is an award-winning, highly individual residence that reveals its full character through experience.
